What is Ramadan?

Ramadan ((/ˌræməˈdɑːn/; Arabic: رمضان‎ Ramaḍān, IPA: [rɑmɑˈdˤɑːn]; also transliterated Ramazan, Ramzan, Ramadhan, or Ramathan) is one of the biggest festival in the world and it falls during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad. Followers of Islam Religion mark this event with a period of fasting, prayer, giving to charity and good deed to help others.

When does Ramadan starts?

Fasting begins 20 minute before dawn (fajr) and end only after sunset (maghrib). During this period they won't eat or drink (even water), until the sun has set. Fasting times vary depending on the geographical location. For e.g. Muslims in places like Iceland may have to observe the fasting for the period of 22 hours during the month of June. While Muslims in Chile have the luxury of observing for less than 10 hours.

Is it compulsory to fast during Ramadan?

During Ramadan, fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is compulsory for every Muslim who is sane and mature, both male or female, to fast. According to the religion, Allah would reward who fast, whilst severe punishment is in store for those who do not fast. Children, pregnant, breastfeeding or menstruating women, travellers, the elderly, and the ill are exempt from the fasting.
